PLANNING FOR DISASTER

The best offense is a good defense. Better safe than sorry.

Whatever can go wrong will go wrong. You know the clichés.

Here's a new one: advance planning will save your life, save your home and save you a boatload of money.

Now there's a cliché worth repeating.

Indeed, a lack of planning can cost you dearly. Not just a lack of planning, but also the lack of a specific disaster plan can end up costing you thousands of dollars.

Why Worry About Water Damage?

The average typical household has basic insurance for family and life. The average family perhaps takes the optimistic viewpoint; well sure things could go wrong. But what are the chances of that happening?

The chances of living through a water or fire related accident is not as probable as say, having to see a doctor or attend a funeral. But the facts remain that disasters do happen. And within a day, the average household can be incurring phenomenal expenses for house restoration and repair.

How Unclean Is That Water?

But who says a tornado or an earthquake is going to hit us out of a thousand other people? Just because severe weather doesn't strike, doesn't mean that other water related accidents couldn't happen.

The threat of flash flooding has increased in recent years. Once floodwater infiltrates a home, it can not only damage and crack the foundation, it can also completely soak the ceiling and walls with contaminated water.

There's a reason water is sold in bottles at stores and comes out of a faucet for a monthly fee. That's because although that drinking water is not exactly 100% clean, the water you find everywhere else, particularly in floods and storms, is highly contaminated! This is water that has been released from sewer systems, septic tanks, ranches and farms, is totally unfiltered and is pouring throughout your home. Not exactly a pretty picture.

If walls are ceiling are left standing, it's very likely that mold will develop. Mold can develop anywhere, behind the walls and on ceiling tile.

Other Types Of Water Damage

Even beyond major accidents like flash floods, consider the threat of ceiling leaks and line breaks within your home. While not exactly as traumatic as a flood, this is still very unclean water soaking your home and furnishings.

What may be procrastination to some is a high risk to others. If a flood or water leak happens in your home, will you be prepared? If not with a plan of action, then with lots of extra money to cover for your losses? If you're not prepared, then hopefully the odds will always fall in your favor.
